Polio eradication program

  1. The World Health Organization (WHO) is advancing a global polio eradication program for the realization of a polio-free world.
  2. Information on polio outbreaks is gathered by the Polio Team of the WHO Infection Department from all over the world. Every October, at the WHO headquarters in Genova, polio-related governmental organizations and polio vaccine manufacturers gather from all over the world to discuss the market analysis of that year and the number of vaccines required for the succeeding year.
  3. The policy for the next 5 to 10 years, the development course of new vaccines, as well as other matters are discussed in the meeting. Based on the results of the meeting, UNICEF holds an international tender, and depending on the tender results, the production volume of the vaccine for each company is determined.
  4. Based on this outcome, “polio mice” are shipped to various countries from Japan.
